My Current Mood: Cardi B -Bodak Yellow

Survival, Opportunity, Speed, & Evolution.

Art, Entrepreneurship, and Pop-culture keep my gears going which has always been a huge part of my life. Bodak Yellow premiered in early June 2017, but my first time hearing this song was on The Wendy Williams Show when Cardi B performed during Wendy’s Birthday Show. The beat was hot, the rhythm flow was catchy. I wanted to explore this song. I was curious to learn what was all the hype about. So I sat at my desk, opened my laptop and searched for the uncensored version of this song on Youtube. Here is a clip of the song below. Beware (Language is explicit)

Ok, before I share my commentary on Bodak Yellow,  please agree to have an open mind. Block out the foul language, the disgusting P word aka vagina, and any other scenario that may be deemed as offensive. I personally believe if we look carefully and not be distracted by the obvious, there is a message waiting for us to discover.

After listening to this song serval times, four words came to mind: Survival, Opportunity, Speed, and Evolution. The passion I get from hearing this song is that Cardi B has been waiting for the chance to get this raw message from off her chest for a long time. She finally has the opportunity to address all the people who have been talking mess about her, putting her talent and hustle down, acting fake towards her and trying to do whatever they can to keep her stuck in her past. Cardi B has evolved from being an Exotic Dancer to where now she is on a competitive playing field with other well-known female rappers. Regardless of what anyone has to say about Cardi B, she IS a rapper. If I had to put words into Cardi B’s mouth, I feel like she is saying,

Don’t be mad because I jumped on an opportunity and now I am taking off like lightening. I am working hard on my future doing what I love as a rapper. I am more than a former stripper, I am a legitimate rapper whether you like it or not. You can’t stop me.

Sometimes it is necessary to shut the naysayers up!

What is all the more interesting to me about the video is the symbolism of the Cheetah. Cheetahs are fast and built to run long distances. They will not run out of air because their vital organs (heart and lungs) are broad enough to hold more oxygen. A Cheetahs speed can accelerate from zero to 40 in seconds and can run up to 60 miles per hour. There is no stopping this animal. Not even if you tried.

In conclusion, here is my summary of this song that would be of encouragement to you and me: It is time for us to tackle all of our problems head on. No more wish washiness. No more not taking advantage of the opportunities that come our way. No more caring about what anyone has to say about what we are doing and how we choose to make our moves. Our unique advantage is that no one knows us better than we know ourselves. Let us benefit from what we have and run. Act now towards personal growth quickly. Evolution is inevitable. Can’t nobody stop us…..not even if they tried.

What do you think the symbolism of the Camel mean as it relates to this video? How can you make the characteristic of the Camel work for you in real life?

I love how you unpacked this song, Keianna. I admit I listen to it in all the unedited glory and it really gets me hype! Hearing this song reminds me that the underdog can come out on top with hard work, dedication, and consistency. So never underestimate another sister out here making “money moves.” I love it!

Beautifully written post, lady. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
